When components must operate in corrosive environments, elevated temperatures, or long-term implantable applications, engineers frequently specify platinum because few materials can match its combination of corrosion resistance, electrical stability, biocompatibility, and manufacturing versatility.

Platinum's noble-metal characteristics make it exceptionally resistant to oxidation and chemical attack while maintaining stable electrical properties throughout its service life. Its high density also provides excellent radiopacity, making it ideal for implantable medical devices and image-guided procedures.

Reference Grade platinum is typically selected for RTDs and thermocouples where predictable resistance-temperature characteristics are critical.
