METALLURGICAL TESTING . . . AS YOU REQUIRE IT

Our Metallurgical Testing services, featuring the equipment described below, are available for our regular customers and also for those who require Metallurgical Testing services on an as-needed, stand-alone basis. For more information and pricing, please call Sigmund Cohn Corp. Sales Department at 914-664-5300.

Sophisticated testing and control equipment in use at Sigmund Cohn Corp. include the following:

ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR

Used on metal before it is drawn into wire, the Ultrasonic Flaw Detector facilitates the removal of internal defects. It is also used as a gauge to measure our metal melting procedures and processing techniques.

How it works
A transducer is coupled to the metal to be tested and a signal is transmitted through the metal. Discontinuities cause a disturbance in thesignal pattern, which are bounced back to the transducer and are displayed on the CRT screen. Shrinkage cavities and cracks that may occur during the melting and working of metal are detected and removed before they find their way into the final product.

EDDY CURRENT TESTER

The Eddy Current Tester is used after ultrasonic testing to check for the presence of surface defects that may have been introduced during the manufacturing process.

How it works
The Eddy Current Tester produces an electromagnetic field around the rod or wire to be tested. Surface defects in the metal produce an electromagnetic field of their own. In defect-free metal, the two fields are in balance. The presence of a defect creates an imbalance which is displayed on a CRT screen.

The severity, depth and exact location of the flaw can be determined by interpreting the screen image. Depending on equipment settings, defects as severe as stress cracking or as superficial as scratches can be identified.

TENSILE TESTER

Sigmund Cohn Corp. has six state-of-the-art tensile testers with data acquisition and computer control capability. Tensile properties are measured by stretching a wire until it breaks. The wires tested range in diameters finer than a human hair (0.0005") up to 1/4" rod.

Uses
Tests wire for tensile strength and elongation. Routine process control and quality checks.

WINDING MACHINE

Sigmund Cohn Corp. has six computer controlled wire winding machines for nearly all our fine size wire.

Features
Configuration, tension on the spool and quantity are precisely controlled. Layering and pitch required by customers and the entire winding program are stored in the computer and can be duplicated again and again.

TRIPLE POINT OF WATER CELL

The triple point of water cells by Sigmund Cohn Corp. to calibrate thermometers, thermocouples and other temperature-sensitive devices.

How it works
The triple point of water is a thermometric fixed point on the ITS-90 Temperature Scale. It provides a useful check point for verifying the condition and stability of reference thermometers.

Assures the quality of Sigmund Cohn Corp. thermometers for critical test temperature measurement.
